Fulacht fia, Cappagh, Co. Clare

On the lower western slope of Turloughmore Mountain in County Clare, a low horseshoe-shaped mound sits on a broad flat terrace, unremarkable at a glance but quietly eloquent about how people cooked and gathered here in prehistoric Ireland.

This is a fulacht fia, a type of cooking site found in enormous numbers across Ireland, typically Bronze Age in origin. The characteristic form is always the same: a crescent or horseshoe of burnt and cracked stone, accumulated over repeated use, surrounding a trough that would once have held water brought to the boil by dropping fire-heated stones into it. When the stones shattered from the thermal shock, they were discarded to the sides, building up the mound over time.

What makes the Cappagh example quietly satisfying is how neatly it conforms to the logic of the type. The mound measures nine metres north to south and eight metres east to west, rising to just under a metre in height, with a shallow central hollow roughly two metres by two and a half metres. That hollow opens eastward onto a small pool, fed by a spring emerging from the base of a low bedrock cliff. Whoever chose this spot chose it deliberately: a reliable water source directly adjacent, a flat working area, a sheltered aspect. The mound itself is composed of a dense concentration of heat-shattered limestone fragments in grey and black soil, the blackening a result of charcoal and organic residue accumulated through sustained use. The spring, still active, gives the site a particular quality. The water that feeds the pool today is the same kind of water that made the site worth returning to in the first place.
