Settlement Sites
In a ploughed field at Coolvallanane Beg in County Cork, a patch of darkened, fire-cracked earth measuring roughly eight metres east to west and six metres north to south marks the remains of a fulacht fia.
The name, sometimes rendered as fulacht fiadh, refers to a type of Bronze Age cooking or processing site found in extraordinary numbers across Ireland, typically identified by a mound of shattered and heat-reddened stones left over from repeated use. The standard method involved heating stones in a fire and dropping them into a water-filled trough until the water boiled, a surprisingly efficient technique that left behind the characteristic spread of burnt and fragmented material still visible here from the surface.
