It is a fulacht fia, a type of prehistoric cooking site found in enormous numbers across Ireland, typically consisting of a horseshoe-shaped or oval mound of burnt stone accumulated over repeated use of a nearby water trough or pit. The basic principle involved heating stones in a fire, then dropping them into a water-filled pit to bring it to a boil; the cracked and spent stones were raked aside after each use, gradually forming the mound that survives today. This one at Cronavan measures fourteen metres long and ten metres wide, substantial enough to suggest regular, perhaps communal, use over a considerable period.

What makes this site quietly interesting is its relationship to its immediate landscape. It does not stand in isolation. Two further fulachta fiadh lie roughly three hundred metres to the northwest, making Cronavan part of a small local cluster of these monuments. Such groupings are not unusual in Cork, a county that contains a remarkably dense concentration of them, but they raise questions that archaeology has not fully settled: were these sites used simultaneously by different groups, seasonally by the same community, or do they simply reflect repeated return to a stretch of ground that offered the right combination of water, fuel, and open space across many generations? The mound sits on a natural rise within the field, which would have kept it slightly above the wetter ground that fulachta fiadh typically required close by.
