It is the kind of thing that could easily be mistaken for a natural feature of the landscape, but the dark, burnt material packed into its crescent form tells a different story. This is a fulacht fia, a type of prehistoric cooking site found in great numbers across Ireland, typically consisting of a mound of fire-cracked stone accumulated beside a trough that would have been filled with water and heated using stones brought to temperature in a nearby fire. They cluster in damp, low-lying ground almost by design, since access to water was central to how they worked.

The Dromore example measures roughly 12 metres north to south and 10 metres east to west, rising to about a metre in height, with an opening of approximately 4.3 metres facing south-west. When the site was first recorded, it appeared as a somewhat smaller feature, partially obscured by overgrowth. Later, archaeological test trenching carried out in advance of a proposed housing development produced more precise dimensions and confirmed that the mound sits directly on peat, a detail that places it firmly in the kind of waterlogged, boggy terrain these sites consistently favour. The peat layer beneath also raises the possibility of good organic preservation below the surface, though the trenching record does not pursue that further. The housing development proposal that prompted the investigation serves as a reminder of how often these sites surface, quite literally, only when groundwork begins.
