Fulacht fia, Groin, Co. Kerry

At Groin in County Kerry, a cluster of ancient cooking sites once sat on flat, poorly drained rough pasture, the kind of waterlogged ground that prehistoric communities specifically sought out when building fulachtaí fia.

A fulacht fia is a Bronze Age cooking place, typically comprising a horseshoe-shaped mound of burnt and shattered stone beside a trough that would have been filled with water and heated by dropping fire-cracked rocks into it. They are among the most common archaeological monument types in Ireland, yet the grouping at Groin was notable enough to be mapped and named as a distinct cluster, appearing on the 1939 Ordnance Survey six-inch map under the label 'Fulachta Fian'.

At that time, at least three mounds were recorded in the immediate area, with further sites lying within roughly fifty to one hundred metres in both directions, suggesting this corner of Kerry once saw sustained, repeated use across what may have been a considerable span of prehistoric time. When archaeologists visited in 1999, however, the site had been caught up in a holiday-home development. The mound that had given the location its scheduled status had left no visible trace above ground, and subsequent monitoring of the groundworks carried out for the housing complex, documented by Dennehy in 2003, failed to recover any physical remains of it either. The monument had effectively been erased, its burnt stone, charcoal, and any associated organic material gone without record.

What survives nearby tells a partial story. A burnt spread and a possible second fulacht fia lie to the south-east, and two further fulachtaí fia to the north-west, all within about one hundred metres of where this particular mound once stood. The archaeology of the wider landscape remains, even if this single site within it does not.
