Fulacht fia, Islands, Co. Kilkenny

At the edge of a Co. Kilkenny bog, an oval mound roughly twenty metres across sits on slightly higher, drier ground, its surface pitted with three distinct and deep depressions.

The mound is a fulacht fia, a type of prehistoric cooking site found in great numbers across Ireland, typically consisting of a burnt mound of fire-cracked stone accumulated beside a water trough. Heated stones were dropped into a water-filled pit to bring it to boiling point, and the discarded, shattered stones gradually built up into the characteristic horseshoe or oval shape that survives today. The depressions here are ambiguous: they may be the result of later disturbance, or they could reflect the original arrangement of one or more troughs beneath the accumulated mound material.

The site sits on what was probably once the margin of a lake, the surrounding bog preserving the wet, low-lying conditions that made such locations attractive in the first place. Fulachta fiadh are almost invariably found near water, which was essential to their function. The land around this example has since been partly drained for agricultural use, quietly reshaping the waterlogged landscape that would have defined the site in prehistory. What makes this particular location slightly unusual is the density of activity in its immediate vicinity: two further fulachta fiadh lie within 185 metres to the south-west, suggesting this boggy margin was returned to repeatedly, perhaps across generations.
