Fulacht fia, Killeen, Co. Mayo

Along the northern bank of the Fiddaunglass stream in County Mayo, a low grass-covered mound sits in flat, waterlogged pasture, unremarkable to the casual eye.

It is crescent-shaped, roughly 9.6 metres north to south and 7 metres east to west, and rises only half a metre from the ground. Beneath the turf, however, lies a dense accumulation of heat-shattered stone fragments in charcoal-rich soil, the signature material of a fulacht fia, a type of prehistoric cooking site found in enormous numbers across Ireland. The general principle is straightforward: stones were heated in a fire and then dropped into a water-filled trough to bring it to the boil, shattering in the process and gradually building up into the horseshoe or crescent-shaped mounds that survive today. A possible trough area on the north-eastern side of this mound is still faintly legible in the landscape.

What makes this particular site more than a lone curiosity is its position within a linear cluster. At least six burnt mounds have been recorded running along the course of the Fiddaunglass stream, and the nearest of them lies just 10 metres to the north-west. This kind of clustering along a watercourse is well attested elsewhere in Ireland and points to repeated, sustained activity over time, whether for cooking, bathing, or industrial processes such as working leather, all of which have been proposed by researchers as possible uses for fulachtai fia. Close to the north-western end of a nearby knoll sits a rath, a roughly circular earthwork enclosure typical of early medieval settlement, suggesting the area around the stream was in use across different periods. The combination of a prehistoric burnt mound cluster and a later rath in such close proximity adds a layered quality to what might otherwise seem like featureless grazing land.
