Fulacht fia, Kilnadur, Co. Cork

In a tilled field at Kilnadur in County Cork, a spread of burnt and shattered stone roughly ten metres long and eight metres wide marks the remains of a fulacht fia.

The term refers to a type of prehistoric cooking site found in extraordinary numbers across Ireland, typically consisting of a trough dug into the ground, a nearby water source, and a mound of fire-cracked stone built up over repeated use. The method was simple: stones were heated in a fire and dropped into a water-filled trough until the water boiled, presumably for cooking meat. Over time, the discarded burnt stone accumulated into a horseshoe-shaped mound, which is what tends to survive. At Kilnadur, that mound has been reduced and spread by centuries of cultivation, but the scorched material remains visible at the surface.

Fulachtaí fia are among the most common archaeological monument types in Ireland, with thousands recorded across the country, yet individually they attract little attention. Most date to the Bronze Age, broadly speaking the period from around 2000 BC to 600 BC, though some examples fall outside that range. The Kilnadur site offers no surviving structural detail beyond its spread of burnt material, but that modest footprint in the soil carries the same basic signature as sites found in bogs, river margins, and low-lying fields throughout Munster. The fact that it survives at all in an actively worked agricultural field is itself worth noting.
