Fulacht fia, Lackenbehy, Co. Cork

At Lackenbehy in County Cork, there was once a fulacht fia, one of the low, horseshoe-shaped mounds found scattered across the Irish countryside that are generally understood to have served as ancient cooking sites.

The typical fulacht fia consists of a mound of fire-cracked stones accumulated beside a trough, where water was heated by dropping in stones that had been made red-hot in a fire. They date mostly to the Bronze Age, and Ireland has thousands of them, making them among the most common archaeological monument types in the country. The one at Lackenbehy, however, is no longer there to be counted among them.
