Fulacht fia, Lambhill, Co. Galway

In a field that was once the bed of a seasonal lake, a low grassy mound sits so quietly in the landscape that most walkers would step over it without a second thought.

It measures roughly fourteen metres north to south and just under half a metre in height, a barely perceptible rise in otherwise flat reclaimed pastureland. Beneath the grass, though, is a mass of burnt limestone, the characteristic debris of a fulacht fia, and that detail reframes the whole unremarkable scene.

A fulacht fia is a Bronze Age cooking site, typically consisting of a horseshoe-shaped mound formed from thousands of fire-cracked stones discarded after use. The method involved heating stones in a fire and then dropping them into a water-filled trough to bring it to the boil, a process that eventually shatters the rock and renders it useless for further heating. Over generations of repeated use, the rejected stones accumulated into the mounds we find today, often beside streams or, as here, at the margins of a turlough. A turlough is a low-lying area of ground, common in the limestone karst regions of Connacht, that floods in winter and drains away in warmer months, leaving behind a flat, grass-covered plain. The site at Lambhill sits at the southern end of one such drained turlough, and the proximity to a reliable seasonal water source would have made it a practical location for exactly this kind of activity. The mound is described as subcircular and very poorly preserved, its original form softened by time and agricultural activity into something closer to a gentle undulation than a defined archaeological feature.
