Fulacht fia, Lisleagh, Co. Cork

In a reclaimed pasture at Lisleagh in north Cork, a low grass-covered mound sits quietly in a field, its contents entirely invisible to anyone who does not already know what they are looking at.

Beneath the turf lies a spread of burnt material, the characteristic signature of a fulacht fia, a type of prehistoric cooking or processing site found widely across Ireland. The basic form is always the same: a mound of fire-cracked stone and charcoal, the accumulated debris from repeatedly heating stones and dropping them into a water-filled trough to bring it to the boil. They are among the most common archaeological monument types in the country, yet each site carries its own quiet particularity.

What makes this example at Lisleagh especially interesting is that it does not stand alone. It belongs to a cluster of four such monuments in close proximity to one another, a grouping that raises questions about how intensively this part of north Cork was used in prehistory, and by whom. Fulachta fiadh are generally dated to the Bronze Age, roughly 2000 to 500 BC, though some have produced dates outside that range. Whether this cluster represents repeated use of a favoured location over generations, or near-simultaneous activity by a community working the same landscape, is the kind of question that fieldwork alone cannot always answer. The reclaimed pasture setting is itself a reminder of how much the Irish countryside has been reshaped since these sites were in use, with land drainage and agricultural improvement burying or disturbing monuments that were once part of a very different kind of managed landscape.
