Fulacht fia, Lissanisky, Co. Cork

Sitting quietly in a pasture in Lissanisky, north County Cork, is a spread of burnt and blackened material measuring roughly 42 metres east to west and 24 metres north to south.

There is no wall, no tower, no obvious structure to draw the eye, yet this low, dark stain in the ground represents one of the most common and most debated monument types in the Irish archaeological record.

A fulacht fia, sometimes called a burnt mound, is the remains of a prehistoric cooking or processing site. The typical arrangement involved a trough, usually timber-lined or stone-lined and sunk into the ground, into which water was poured. Stones were heated in a nearby fire and then dropped into the trough to bring the water to a boil. Over repeated use, those fire-cracked stones were discarded into a crescentic or horseshoe-shaped mound around the trough, leaving behind the characteristic spread of shattered, heat-reddened material that survives today. The Lissanisky example is a substantial one, and it does not stand alone. A smaller patch of dark soil lies roughly 35 metres to the southwest, and a second fulacht fiadh sits approximately 100 metres to the south-southeast, suggesting that this corner of north Cork saw repeated or prolonged activity, possibly across generations. Such clustering is not unusual; fulachta fiadh are frequently found in loose groupings near sources of water, which would have been essential to the whole process.
