The one at Lyradane, in County Cork, sits in boggy ground on the south side of a well, a low kidney-shaped mound barely 60 centimetres tall and roughly 11 metres across at its widest point, with an opening facing south-west. What makes it quietly notable is not any grand singularity but rather the company it keeps: another fulacht fiadh lies just 90 metres to the west, the two monuments sitting close enough together to suggest this wet, low-lying ground was a place of some repeated, purposeful activity.

A fulacht fia, broadly speaking, is a burnt mound, the accumulated debris of a cooking method that involved heating stones in a fire and dropping them into a water-filled trough to bring it to the boil. The shattered, fire-cracked stones pile up over time into the characteristic horseshoe or kidney shape seen here. Most examples in Ireland date to the Bronze Age, roughly 1500 to 500 BC, though the practice may have continued later in some areas. The Lyradane mound measures 6.2 metres north to south and 11.3 metres east to west, with the distinctive opening, here 3.7 metres wide, where the trough would once have sat. The mound has been eroded in places, as is common with sites that have spent millennia under cultivation pressure or simply the slow work of weather and grazing animals. The proximity of a natural well is entirely typical; fulachtaí fia are almost always found near a reliable water source, and the boggy ground here would have made that supply dependable year-round.
