Fulacht fia, Oldabbey, Co. Cork

By the mid-twentieth century, somebody mapping the fields around Oldabbey in County Cork noted a mound in the pasture and recorded it on the Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1940.

That mound is now gone, or at least invisible, absorbed into reclaimed farmland without leaving any surface trace. What it almost certainly marked was a fulacht fia, one of the most common yet quietly enigmatic monument types in the Irish landscape.

A fulacht fia is a prehistoric cooking site, typically consisting of a horseshoe-shaped mound of fire-cracked stones beside a trough, often timber-lined, that would have been filled with water and heated by dropping stones from a fire directly into the liquid. Thousands of these sites are known across Ireland, the majority dating to the Bronze Age, and County Cork has an unusually dense concentration of them. The one at Oldabbey followed the familiar pattern of survival and loss: visible enough as a low mound to catch a surveyor's eye in 1940, but subsequently levelled as the surrounding ground was improved for agriculture. Reclamation of wetland and rough pasture, which accelerated considerably through the twentieth century, accounts for the disappearance of many such sites across the country.

What remains at Oldabbey is essentially a cartographic ghost, a dot on an old map where archaeology once sat just above the soil. There is nothing to see on the ground today, and the site is on private farmland in any case. Its interest lies less in what survives than in what the record implies: that even unremarkable-looking corners of mid-Cork farmland were once places of regular human activity, and that the evidence for that activity can vanish within a single generation of land improvement.
