Fulacht fia, Park, Co. Kerry

A farmer ploughing a field in Park, County Kerry, did not expect to turn up evidence of prehistoric cooking, but that is effectively what happened when the ground revealed the characteristic dark spread of a fulacht fia.

These sites, found in their thousands across Ireland, are the remnants of ancient outdoor cooking places, typically Bronze Age in date, where stones were heated in fire and then dropped into a water-filled trough to bring it to a boil. The tell-tale signs are always the same: scorched, shattered stone, blackened soil, and charcoal, the debris of repeated heating and cooling over what may have been centuries of use.

The mound at Park survives as a semi-circular, levelled spread measuring roughly 28 metres east to west and 24 metres north to south, rising only about 20 to 25 centimetres above the surrounding improved pasture. It sits along the eastern boundary of the field in which it was found. What makes this particular site more than a scatter of burnt stone is the trough. A rectangular wooden trough, the vessel into which heated stones would have been dropped, was recovered during ploughing and has since been preserved in place and backfilled, sitting beneath the surface where it was found rather than being removed or lost entirely. Wooden troughs of this kind rarely survive in such condition; waterlogged or anaerobic ground is usually required to preserve organic material over millennia, and their recovery during agricultural work is often a matter of chance.
