These are ancient cooking sites, typically Bronze Age in date, built around a trough filled with water that was heated by dropping fire-cracked stones into it. The shattered, heat-stressed stones were raked out after each use and piled up beside the trough, and it is that accumulation of burnt and broken rock that forms the characteristic mound visible today. Ireland has thousands of them, more than almost anywhere else in Europe, yet individual examples like this one rarely attract much attention.

Fulachtaí fia were in use roughly between 1500 and 500 BC, though some sites have produced dates outside that range. The name itself is a medieval Irish term, loosely translated as "cooking place of the deer" or "cooking place of the wild animal", though what was actually being cooked, and for whom, has been debated for decades. Some researchers have proposed that these sites served travelling hunters or seasonal gatherings; others have suggested uses beyond cooking altogether, including textile processing or even bathing. The Rathedmond example sits in a part of County Sligo that has long been recognised as archaeologically significant, the wider Sligo region containing one of the densest concentrations of prehistoric monuments in Ireland, from megalithic tombs to court cairns and passage graves. A fulacht fia in this landscape would have been part of an active and densely inhabited prehistoric world, not an isolated curiosity.
