Fulacht fia, Rathfreedy, Co. Limerick

A low, unassuming mound rising barely a quarter of a metre above the pasture of Rathfreedy in County Limerick is easily mistaken for a natural feature of the land, a slight swell in the ground where grass grows as it does everywhere else around it.

But the material beneath is burnt, heat-shattered stone accumulated over centuries of repeated use, and that tells a different story entirely.

This is a fulacht fia, a type of ancient cooking site found in large numbers across Ireland, typically dating to the Bronze Age, though some examples were used into the early medieval period. The basic principle involves heating stones in a fire and then dropping them into a water-filled trough to bring the water to a boil, a method that leaves behind a distinctive crescent or horseshoe-shaped mound of discarded, fire-cracked stone. The Rathfreedy example is roughly oval in plan, measuring eight metres north to south and eleven metres east to west, and sits in slightly undulating pasture. The site was recorded by Denis Power and uploaded to the national record in August 2011.

The mound survives to a modest height of 0.25 metres, which is fairly typical of these sites, many of which have been reduced over time by ploughing, grazing, and general agricultural activity. Because fulachtaí fia are often found near water sources, it is worth looking at the surrounding terrain for any indication of a former stream or wet ground nearby, though the notes do not specify one at this location. The site lies in open farmland, and as with most recorded archaeological monuments in the Irish countryside, access would depend on landowner permission. There is little to see above ground beyond the mound itself, but knowing what the dark, fire-cracked material underfoot represents, the residue of repeated communal activity going back perhaps three or four thousand years, gives the ordinary-looking field a quiet weight that a casual glance would never suggest.
