The site was a fulacht fia, a type of monument found in enormous numbers across Ireland, typically dating to the Bronze Age. The standard interpretation is that these were outdoor cooking sites: a trough, often timber-lined, would be filled with water, and stones heated in a nearby fire would then be dropped in to bring the water to a boil. The characteristic debris left behind, a spread of fire-cracked stone blackened by repeated heating and cooling, is what gives these sites their distinctive dark, humped profile in fields and pastures.

Before drainage machinery removed it from the landscape, the Rochfordstown example was recorded by Walsh in 1985 as part of a broader survey of the area. What makes the location quietly interesting is not the monument in isolation but its pairing with a second fulacht fia lying roughly 100 metres to the south-east. Such close proximity between two sites of this type is not unheard of, given that fulachtaí fia tend to cluster near water sources, which would have made the spot repeatedly attractive for the same practical reasons across generations. Whether the two were in use simultaneously or represent activity at different periods is something the surviving record does not resolve.
