Fulacht fia, Rossnashunsoge, Co. Cork

In the rough grazing land of Rossnashunsoge, a low crescent of blackened stones sits quietly on the eastern bank of a stream, looking, to an untrained eye, like a natural rise in the ground.

It is not. The mound, measuring roughly 13.5 metres north to south and standing 1.6 metres high, is composed almost entirely of heat-shattered stones and charcoal-enriched soil, the accumulated debris of repeated, deliberate burning. Its two-metre opening faces west, directly towards the water. This is a fulacht fia, a type of prehistoric cooking or processing site found in great numbers across Ireland, typically dating to the Bronze Age. The standard interpretation is that stones were heated in a fire and then dropped into a water-filled trough to bring the liquid to a boil; over time, the cracked, spent stones were raked out and piled up around the trough, forming the distinctive horseshoe or crescent shape that survives here.

What makes this particular example quietly interesting is not just its own good state of preservation, partial erosion notwithstanding, but its immediate context. Another burnt mound lies approximately 80 metres to the north, suggesting that this stretch of streamside ground was used repeatedly, perhaps by different groups at different times, or perhaps by the same community across generations. The site sits within a network of field boundaries, which means later agricultural activity has hemmed it in without entirely destroying it. That proximity to both water and a second mound follows a well-established pattern; fulachtaí fia are almost invariably found near reliable water sources, and clusters of them in a single landscape are not uncommon in Cork and the wider Munster region.
