Fulacht fia, Scanlansland, Co. Kilkenny

What makes Scanlansland quietly remarkable is not any single prehistoric site but the sheer density of them.

Within a radius of roughly 200 metres, at least six fulachta fia, the characteristic burnt mounds left behind by prehistoric cooking or industrial activity, cluster along the low ground sloping down towards the Douglas River in County Kilkenny. A fulacht fia, for those unfamiliar with the term, is typically identified as a horseshoe-shaped mound of fire-cracked stones and charcoal-darkened earth, the accumulated debris of repeated episodes in which stones were heated and dropped into water-filled troughs to bring them to the boil. They are among the most common prehistoric monument types in Ireland, found in their thousands, and they tend to appear near water. What is less common is finding them gathered so closely together.

The site described here sits immediately south of a stream, on a south-west-facing slope that descends towards the Douglas River, a setting that would have provided reliable water access in prehistory. It is one of at least six such monuments in the immediate vicinity, all recorded by Prendergast in 1955. The nearest neighbours lie roughly 60 metres to the north-east and 80 metres to the east-north-east, with further examples clustering within 100 to 200 metres to the south-east. Whether this concentration reflects repeated seasonal use of a particularly favoured spot, or some more specialised, communal activity carried out over generations, is not something the archaeological record here answers definitively. But the grouping is striking enough to suggest that this stretch of low-lying Kilkenny farmland once saw sustained and purposeful prehistoric activity on a scale that a lone mound in a field would never hint at.
