Gasworks, Cloghmacsimon, Co. Cork

At Cloghmacsimon, on the outskirts of Bandon in County Cork, the remains of a gasworks sit quietly among the industrial archaeology of the Bandon River valley.
Gasworks were once a feature of nearly every sizeable Irish town, producing coal gas through the heating of coal in enclosed retorts, with the resulting gas stored in large iron holders and piped to homes and businesses for lighting and heating. Most have since been demolished or built over, which makes any surviving structure from this network of local utilities relatively uncommon.
