That a threshold should outlast the structure it once admitted is one of the quiet ironies of Irish architectural survival, yet it is not uncommon. Gates and doorways, built from dressed stone and set with more care than a field wall, have a way of enduring when the buildings around them collapse or are quarried away over the centuries.

The place-name Castlesaffron likely derives from the Irish, combining a word for castle with a personal name or descriptor, and suggests a defended residence of some kind, probably medieval in origin. Cork was heavily settled by Anglo-Norman lords from the late twelfth century onwards, and the landscape is dotted with the remains of tower houses, bawns, and fortified enclosures built to consolidate land holdings across the following centuries. A bawn, to give the term its context, was a walled enclosure attached to a tower house, used to protect livestock and sometimes to accommodate additional buildings. Gateways into such enclosures were often the most architecturally finished element of the whole complex, framed in cut stone and occasionally carrying heraldic detail or a datestone.
