Grave Yard, Ballintemple, Co. Mayo

The graveyard at Ballintemple in County Mayo carries a name that points to something older than the graves themselves.

Ballintemple, from the Irish Baile an Teampaill, means "townland of the church", a place-name pattern found across Ireland wherever an early ecclesiastical site once anchored a community. The church that gave the townland its name is long gone, but burial grounds of this kind have a tendency to outlast every other structure associated with them, continuing in use across centuries simply because the land was already considered sacred and the dead already gathered there.
