Burial Grounds

Grave Yard, Brewel, Co. Kildare

On the lower north-eastern slope of Brewel Hill in County Kildare, a graveyard sits in open pasture with more layers of enclosure than its modest appearance suggests. The roughly rectangular plot, measuring around 80 metres by 60 metres, is bounded on three sides by a hedged earthen bank and on the south by a stone wall, with a gate near the south-eastern corner. So far, so ordinary. What makes the site more interesting is that the graveyard's own enclosing boundaries are not the oldest earthworks here. Two earlier banks cut across or run through the interior, quietly predating the burial ground that eventually absorbed them.

The more prominent of these earlier features occupies the north-western corner of the graveyard, where a broad earthen bank, roughly 8 metres wide and traceable for about 21 metres, slices across the site at an angle that ignores the graveyard's geometry entirely. A shallow fosse, the term for the ditch typically dug alongside a defensive or boundary earthwork, runs along its eastern side. A second, meandering bank is visible in the southern half of the interior, where it runs northward parallel to the western enclosing bank before turning eastward to cross the site. This kind of palimpsest, where successive generations of activity leave overlapping marks on the same ground, is not unusual in Irish landscapes, but it is relatively rare to find the layers so legible in a single graveyard. The levelled remains of a church also survive toward the north-west of centre, its footprint now largely flattened into the turf. Burials concentrate around this former church and date from the nineteenth century to the present, suggesting continuous use of the site even as the building itself disappeared.

The graveyard is accessible via an entrance gate near the south-eastern corner, though the interior is described as overgrown, which means the earthworks, while present, require some patience to read. The earlier banks are most visible in the southern half of the site and in the cut-off north-western corner, where the change in ground level is still appreciable.
