The Irish name Templebeg, or An Teampall Beag, means simply "the small church", a modest title for a site that has now receded almost entirely below the level of notice.

When Ordnance Survey fieldworkers visited in the mid-nineteenth century, the picture was considerably more legible. Their notebooks recorded an enclosed area of around 60 by 40 metres, with the ruin of a small building measuring roughly 8.5 by 4.5 metres still standing within it. That enclosure, typical of early Irish ecclesiastical sites where a surrounding boundary defined sacred ground, has since disappeared, and the building itself has followed. What the depression in the earth represents is the gradual subsidence of those ruined walls back into the landscape, leaving only a faint signature on ground that sits on elevated terrain above the harbour. J. Cuppage documented the site in the 1986 Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey, by which point even the ruins visible to the nineteenth-century surveyors had gone.

The site is not marked by any standing structure, and the hollow that constitutes its entire visible remains requires some knowing before it reads as anything at all. Its position on high ground at the southern edge of Ventry Harbour at least means the wider setting retains something of its character, the inlet stretching out below a place that was once, by any measure, a functioning centre of local religious life.
