Burial Grounds

Grave Yard, Cloonlusk, Co. Galway

On the official Ordnance Survey maps, this small burial ground at Cloonlusk is recorded plainly as a Grave Yard.

Locally, however, it goes by a different name entirely: a CBG, the initials standing for Cillín Burial Ground. A cillín is an unconsecrated burial place, traditionally used for unbaptised infants, suicides, and others who, under Catholic practice, were denied a place in consecrated ground. The distinction matters. These sites occupy a particular and often sorrowful position in the Irish landscape, frequently unmarked and easy to overlook, their small headstones reflecting both the grief of families and the rigid social architecture of the Church.

The site sits just north of the centre of Cloonlusk, within what is thought to be a probable early ecclesiastical enclosure, suggesting that religious activity here predates any formal Church organisation of the land. The burial ground itself is roughly rectangular, measuring approximately 18.9 metres on its longer axis and 13.1 metres across. Its edges are defined by a low earthen scarp, rising to a maximum height of around 0.8 metres, with a section of stone revetment, that is, a facing of stone used to retain the earthwork, reinforcing the south-western side. Inside, several rows of small, undressed headstones run roughly north-west to south-east, indicating that the graves themselves are oriented east to west in keeping with the old Christian convention of burial. Four rectangular areas outlined by set stones are also visible, most likely marking individual plots. At the south-eastern end, three whitethorn bushes grow in a cluster. The association between whitethorn and burial or liminal ground is deeply embedded in Irish folk tradition, and their presence here, whether planted intentionally or self-seeded over generations, fits a pattern seen at many such sites across the country.
