Grave Yard, Commons, Co. Kildare

A small graveyard enclosed by a stone wall sits on the southern edge of a narrow east-west valley in County Kildare, and what makes it quietly remarkable is not the graves themselves but the layers of purpose that have accumulated around it over centuries. The site sits along what was once a pilgrimage route running from Naas to Glendalough, the early medieval monastic city founded by St Kevin in the Wicklow Mountains. An old laneway just to the north of the enclosure may itself have formed part of that route, worn into the ground by generations of people walking east towards the valley of the two lakes. Roughly fifty metres on each side, the enclosure is overgrown and roughly square, the kind of place that resists easy reading until you begin to notice what it contains.

Within the walls stands a ruined church, and inside it, recorded in 1985, are three cross slabs and a fragment of a font. Cross slabs are among the more enduring forms of early Christian stone carving in Ireland, typically flat stones incised with a cross design and associated with early ecclesiastical sites; the presence of three here, alongside a font fragment, suggests a place of some significance in the local devotional landscape, even if its founding date and dedication are no longer clear. Roughly 150 metres to the east-south-east lies Toberkevin, a holy well, the name invoking St Kevin himself and reinforcing the sense that this corner of Kildare was once understood as part of a sacred corridor leading towards Glendalough. The legible grave markers within the enclosure date from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, later additions to a site whose origins reach back considerably further.
