It is an unusual thing to encounter in a rural Connacht burial ground, sitting quietly among comparatively recent inscriptions without any obvious explanation attached to it.

The graveyard is irregularly shaped, roughly sixty metres across in either direction, and is enclosed by a stone wall with access from the south-east. A medieval church occupies the north-west corner of the site, which suggests the burial ground has been in continuous or near-continuous use for several centuries at least. The earliest dateable headstone recorded here carries the year 1681, placing it in the decades following the Cromwellian upheavals that reshaped land ownership and community life across Connacht. That a graveyard of this age should still be receiving burials in the twenty-first century is itself a quiet indicator of the depth of local continuity.

The Maltese cross marker is the detail worth seeking out once inside the enclosure. It does not announce itself, and the notes give no name or date connected to it, which makes it harder to place historically. Whether it reflects a local family's particular allegiances or simply a carver's choice of motif is an open question. The church ruin in the north-west corner is worth examining alongside it, as the two together give a sense of the long overlap between early ecclesiastical settlement and the burial practices that grew up around it.
