Grave Yard, Tagheen, Co. Mayo

The small townland of Tagheen, tucked into the quieter reaches of County Mayo, contains a graveyard that sits just beyond the edges of well-documented Irish heritage.

It is a recorded monument, officially noted and assigned a place in the national inventory, yet the details of its history, its age, and the community it once served remain formally undigitised and largely unpublished.

Tagheen itself takes its name from the Irish Teachín, meaning little house, often a reference to a small early church or oratory. Graveyards bearing this kind of placename association in Mayo frequently cluster around the sites of early medieval ecclesiastical foundations, sometimes no more than a modest enclosure or the ghost of a nave visible in the grass. Whether that is the case here is not yet confirmed in any available record, but the pattern is common enough across the west of Ireland to make the possibility worth holding in mind when reading the landscape around the site.
