Geoffrey Keating, the seventeenth-century priest and scholar whose monumental history of Ireland, Foras Feasa ar Éirinn, shaped how generations understood the Irish past, is buried here. A plaque above the chapel doorway acknowledges him, among others, and that quiet memorial is about as much ceremony as the place offers.

The graveyard itself is roughly rectangular, running approximately 56 metres north to south and 65 metres east to west, narrowing slightly at the southern end. A chapel stands at its eastern edge, its gable wall meeting the enclosing boundary, and the whole site sits on a break in the slope rather than the hilltop itself, giving it a slightly sheltered, inward quality. Among the headstones are a number of seventeenth-century graveslabs, though two of them have sunk below the surface and are no longer visible. One remains above ground. Alongside these older markers are well-carved eighteenth and nineteenth-century headstones, the kind of confident funerary stonework that became something of a craft tradition in Tipperary during that period.

Keating himself was born in the late sixteenth century in the nearby Tipperary parish of Tubbrid, and spent much of his later life in the area after returning from clerical studies in Bordeaux. His history of Ireland, written in Irish prose, was completed around 1634 and circulated widely in manuscript form long before it was ever printed. That a figure of such scholarly reach should lie in a modest hillside churchyard, marked by a shared plaque rather than any grander monument, gives the site an understated quality that feels entirely in keeping with how overlooked the place has been.
