Graveslab, Baile Chláir, Co. Galway

On the floor of a friary nave in County Galway lies a broken stone slab that has, in a sense, gone silent twice: once when it cracked, and again when the words carved into it faded beyond reading.

The slab measures roughly a metre long and just under a metre wide, a substantial piece of funerary stonework laid flat among the remains of the friary at Baile Chláir, known in English as Claregalway. What makes it quietly puzzling is that its inscription, carefully documented by scholars, can no longer be seen at all.

When Bradley and Dunne examined and recorded the slab in 1992, they were able to read a memorial formula common to seventeenth-century Irish grave slabs: "Pray for the souls of William Sidy and his wife Onora Fahe and their posterity, 1688." The date places it in the later decades of Franciscan use of the friary, which had been founded in the thirteenth century and endured a turbulent post-Reformation existence. The names themselves are interesting: Sidy is an uncommon surname in this part of Connacht, while Fahe, or Fahy, is well attested in east Galway. The phrasing "posterity" rather than children or heirs suggests a fairly standard Latin-influenced formula rendered in vernacular English, asking prayers not just for the couple but for all their descendants. When the site was inspected again in June 2018, the slab matching those recorded dimensions was still there, but the inscription had vanished entirely, whether through weathering, foot traffic, or the slow action of damp on soft limestone is unclear.

The friary church at Claregalway remains a roofless but largely intact medieval structure, and the nave floor where this slab lies is accessible to visitors. The inscription, should anyone hope to trace its lettering in raking light or by touch, is, on current evidence, gone.
