Graveslab, Ballycallan, Co. Kilkenny

In the graveyard at Ballycallan, Co. Kilkenny, a small stone tip protrudes from the earth a few centimetres above the grass, easy to step over without a second glance.

Only the lower portion of the slab remains visible, measuring roughly 40 centimetres in length and tapering towards its base, and yet the decoration carved into it connects the present ground to a world seven centuries removed. Cut into the stone is an incised cross-shaft ending in a fleur-de-lis terminal, the stylised three-petalled lily form that appeared frequently in medieval ecclesiastical stonework across Ireland and Europe. The slab sits to the west of the graveyard's centre, immediately east of a 19th-century Holmes memorial, the two monuments belonging to entirely different eras yet sharing the same plot of ground.

This is one of four tapering graveslabs recorded in the Ballycallan graveyard, all of them associated with the medieval church that once stood here. Tapering graveslabs, which narrow from the head end towards the foot, were a common form of marker in Ireland during the 13th and 14th centuries, often decorated with crosses, foliate designs, or figural carvings. The historian William Carrigan noted all four slabs in his 1905 history of the diocese of Ossory, placing them within what was already, by his time, a long-established tradition of local ecclesiastical record-keeping. The fact that only a fragment of this particular slab now breaks the surface suggests the rest lies buried, whether through the gradual accumulation of earth, later burials, or both. What survives above ground is just enough to confirm the quality and intention of whoever commissioned it.
