Graveslab, Holycross, Co. Tipperary

At the base of an altar shrine in the south transept chapel of Holycross Abbey lies a stone slab that is easy to walk past and difficult to date with certainty.

It names nobody. It carries no inscription, no epitaph, no clue as to who lies beneath or once lay beneath it. What it does carry is a ring-headed cross, a form in which the arms of the cross are enclosed within a circle, with a cross-shaft running below it and a small knop, a rounded decorative protrusion, where the shaft meets the head. The slab tapers from top to base, measuring just over 1.6 metres in length and roughly 42 centimetres across at the widest point, and it rests flat on the floor, worn smooth enough that the carving must be sought out rather than simply seen.

Holycross Abbey, a Cistercian foundation on the River Suir in County Tipperary, was a major centre of pilgrimage in medieval Ireland, drawing visitors to a relic believed to be a fragment of the True Cross. The abbey church itself is a substantial and well-preserved structure, and the transept chapels retain a good deal of their medieval stonework and fittings. This particular slab sits in the second chapel south of the chancel, positioned at the foot of the north wall shrine, and is thought to date from the seventeenth century. That dating would place it after the worst of the Reformation disruptions to Irish monastic life, in a period when some religious activity at suppressed sites continued informally or was quietly resumed. A graveslab of that era, laid without a name in a space still freighted with older devotional meaning, carries its own kind of quiet weight.
