Graveslab, Laughanstown, Co. Dublin

A granite slab lying partly buried in the ground, just three metres east of a church gable, might not seem like much at first glance.

But the details reward attention. The face of this particular stone is convex, gently bowed outward rather than flat, which gives it a subtle sculptural quality that sets it apart from a plain marker. It measures just over a metre in length and less than forty centimetres across, modest in size but deliberate in form, and it belongs to a group of early medieval grave slabs whose quiet presence in the soil says something about how the dead were commemorated long before inscribed headstones became the norm.

This slab is one of eleven granite early grave slabs recorded at Tully graveyard in the Laughanstown area of south County Dublin, documented by Swords in 2009. Early grave slabs of this type, flat stones placed directly over a burial and sometimes shaped or decorated, are associated with early Christian burial practice in Ireland, predating the upright headstone tradition that became widespread in later centuries. The use of granite here is notable; it is a durable local material, and the consistent use of it across all eleven slabs at this site suggests a coherent, possibly coordinated, burial tradition rather than incidental or ad hoc commemoration. The slabs are catalogued under the Sites and Monuments Record reference DU026-023001-.

Tully graveyard is the place to look, and the slab in question lies a short distance east of the church gable, though partly buried, so it may take a moment to locate and orientate yourself. As with many early medieval burial sites in Ireland, the ground level has shifted over centuries of use, which accounts for why stones like this are only partially visible. The graveyard itself continues to hold physical evidence of the wider group of eleven slabs, so it is worth moving slowly and looking carefully across the area near the church remains rather than focusing on any single spot.
