Tombs & Memorials
Loughrea, a market town on the northern shore of its namesake lake in east Galway, holds a graveslab among its recorded monuments, a category of object that rewards closer attention than it usually receives.
Graveslabs are carved stone markers, typically medieval in origin, laid flat over a burial or set upright as a memorial. They range from the plainly inscribed to the elaborately decorated, sometimes bearing foliate crosses, effigies, or inscriptions in Latin or Lombardic script that can place them precisely within the craft traditions of a particular century or workshop.
