Graveslab, Moorabbey, Co. Tipperary

Inside the ruined church of Moor Abbey friary in County Tipperary, a large stone slab rests on a plinth against the north wall, close to the east end of the nave.

It is over two metres long, tapered from head to foot, and carved with an incised ringed cross sitting on a pyramidal base. The detail is precise enough to reward close attention: three of the slab's edges carry a narrow chamfer, a shallow angled cut that lifts the stonework slightly from the purely functional, though the chamfer on the top and base edges stops short of the left-hand side, an asymmetry that is easy to miss but quietly deliberate.
