Tombs & Memorials
Outside the east gable wall of St. David's Church in Naas, a flat sandstone slab lies in the open, exposed to the elements. It measures just under one and a half metres in length and sixty centimetres across, and cut into its surface in Roman lettering is a commemoration of Elizabeth Brereton, dated 1694. Grave slabs of this kind, set flush with or just above the ground rather than raised upright, were a common form of memorial in post-medieval Ireland, though the majority have been moved indoors over the centuries, worn smooth, or simply lost. The fact that this one remains in its original position outside the church wall, still legible after more than three hundred years, is what makes it quietly worth noting.
