Graveyard, Ahascragh, Co. Galway

Ahascragh is a small village in east Galway, sitting quietly beside the Ahascragh River, and like many such settlements it keeps its dead in a graveyard that outlasts most of what surrounds it.

Burial grounds of this kind, particularly those attached to early ecclesiastical sites, often preserve centuries of local memory in their arrangement of stones, the wear on inscriptions, and the occasional older feature, such as a remnant enclosure wall or the trace of a medieval church, that survives simply because no one had reason to clear it away.
