Graveyard, An Chorr Riabhach, Co. Galway

A small graveyard sitting on a rise within a cleared pocket of otherwise forested land in Connemara is an unremarkable thing to encounter until you look more closely at how it has changed shape over time.

The earliest Ordnance Survey mapping, the six-inch first edition, recorded it as an unenclosed L-shaped area measuring roughly 25 metres by 20 metres. By the second edition of 1899, the same ground had grown, at least on paper, into a larger oval. Today a stone wall encloses the site, and the original burial area sits at the northeastern end, a remnant of a different arrangement from the one the wall now defines.

The shift from L-shaped to oval is the quiet puzzle here. Graveyards in rural Ireland were frequently added to, reorganised, or simply reinterpreted by surveyors working at different moments, and what looks like expansion may sometimes reflect improved measurement or a change in how the ground was being used rather than a literal extension of burial practice. What is consistent across both editions is the presence of this place at all, maintained on a slight elevation in a landscape that has otherwise been given over to forestry. Lying approximately 45 metres to the north is a holy well, a spring or water source traditionally associated with local devotion and often found in close proximity to early burial grounds throughout the west of Ireland, the pairing of well and graveyard suggesting a long continuity of religious use at this particular spot.
