Graveyard, Annagh, Co. Limerick

In a field in County Limerick, the dead are buried in the shadow of a church that has not been a functioning building for centuries.

The ruins at Annagh occupy the western quadrant of an active graveyard, a quiet but telling arrangement in which the medieval and the more recent share the same enclosed ground, each in their own portion of it.

The church remains are recorded under the site reference LI006-015001-, and their medieval origins place them within a long tradition of ecclesiastical settlement across this part of Limerick. The graveyard itself measures approximately 26 metres north to south and 45 metres east to west, a modest rectangle that has been bounded at some point after 1700 by a stone enclosure wall. That wall, and the entrance gate set into its eastern side, represent the most recent layer of organisation imposed on a site that was already old when they were built. The ruins sit to the west; the surrounding burials, many of them post-medieval, fill the rest of the space. The record was compiled by Caimin O'Brien and uploaded in July 2019 as part of the broader effort to document such sites before they are altered or lost.

The entrance gate on the eastern side is the natural point of approach. Once inside, the proportions of the site become apparent quite quickly; it is not a large enclosure, and the relationship between the ruined church and the surrounding graves is legible at a glance. The stone wall that defines the boundary is worth attention in its own right, particularly for anyone interested in how post-medieval communities maintained and formalised older sacred spaces. The ruins themselves, though not described in detail in the available record, are of medieval date and occupy a specific and deliberate position within the enclosure, which suggests the graveyard layout was organised with some awareness of what was already standing there.
