Most Irish graveyards grew organically around a church wall or spread outward from a ruin in whatever direction the ground allowed. Here, the building occupies the middle of the enclosure, giving the whole site a composed, almost formal quality that draws the eye once you notice it.

The graveyard is rectangular, measuring approximately 28 metres north to south and 47 metres east to west, and is enclosed by a stone wall built after 1700. A single entrance gate opens to the east, which is a common orientation in Christian burial practice, associating the rising sun with resurrection. The church recorded here under the site reference LI056-039001 stands as the focal point of this contained space. Ballyorgan is a small rural townland, and the graveyard is not difficult to find for those making a point of seeking it out, though it sits quietly off the main routes through this part of Limerick. The eastern entrance gate is the natural point of approach, and from there the relationship between the enclosing wall and the centrally placed church becomes immediately apparent. There is nothing showy about the site; its interest lies in that geometric arrangement and in the layered time it represents, a post-medieval wall wrapped around something older, still in use as a place of burial.
