Graveyard, Boherash, Co. Cork

Just north of Glanworth village in County Cork, a walled graveyard quietly accumulates centuries of use around not one but two ruined churches, one tucked inside its boundary and the remains of another positioned just outside its south-eastern corner.

That second ruin, sitting beyond the enclosure wall rather than within it, is the detail that quietly unsettles: it suggests a longer, messier history of religious continuity and displacement than a tidy churchyard scene might imply.

The graveyard itself is roughly rectangular, running approximately 70 metres north to south and 75 metres east to west, enclosed by a stone wall and entered through a gateway in the west wall via a short passage from the road. The more prominent ruin inside, in the north-west quadrant, is the Church of Ireland parish church of Glanworth. The earlier parish church whose remains lie just outside the south-east corner points to an older layer of ecclesiastical activity on the same ground. Burials are spread throughout but concentrate towards the east and south, and the earliest legible headstone dates to 1724. Among the grave markers are low, uninscribed stones, some of which are reused medieval jambs, door or window uprights repurposed as grave markers long after their original structure had fallen. There are also altar tombs to the east of the church, a form of above-ground chest tomb common in Irish churchyards from the seventeenth century onward.

The graveyard remains in occasional use, which means it is maintained to a degree, and access is straightforward via the western entrance passage. Visitors with an eye for stonework should look closely at those low, uninscribed markers: the reuse of medieval architectural fragments as grave furniture is a small but telling sign of how material from earlier buildings was absorbed into later burial practice rather than simply discarded.
