Burial Grounds
A small graveyard south of a parish church might seem like the most ordinary thing in rural Galway, yet the burial ground at Cargin carries a particular quiet quality rooted in its chronology.
The majority of its headstones date to the late nineteenth century, which means the ground holds the memory of a very specific and difficult passage in Irish life, the decades following the Famine, when communities were reconstituting themselves and families were once again able to mark their dead with carved stone rather than leave the earth unmarked.
