Burial Grounds
County Clare has no shortage of old burial grounds, but the graveyard at Castletown occupies a particular kind of silence in the historical record.
It is listed as a monument of note, yet the details that would ordinarily accompany such a designation, its age, its associated church or landowner, the earliest legible stones, remain formally undocumented in any publicly available form. That absence is itself a small curiosity. Many Irish graveyards of this type are medieval in origin, attached to early parish churches or the ruins of later ones, and contain inscribed slabs and table tombs that span several centuries. Whether the same is true here is, for now, a matter for those willing to dig into the physical place itself.
