Burial Grounds
In a paddock adjoining the remains of a church at Ceathrú An Lisín in County Galway, there is, or was, a Christian graveyard.
The difficulty is that nobody can say exactly where. No headstones protrude, no boundary ridge marks the ground, and there is no visible surface trace of any kind. The burial ground exists, for now, primarily as a sentence in an old file.
The sole record of this place comes from a 1933 account by Mac Domhanill, who noted the graveyard in connection with the nearby church site. The description is spare: a Christian graveyard in an adjoining paddock. That the church itself survives as a recorded monument gives some orientation, but the graveyard's precise location has never been established. Whatever once marked it out, whether mounded earth, stone kerbing, or simply the memory of local people, has since been lost to the surface of the land.
