That gap itself is telling. Many Irish graveyards carry centuries of quiet accumulation, from early medieval burial grounds associated with vanished churches, to post-Famine plots where the dead arrived faster than the living could keep count, and it is often the unassuming ones, tucked between terraced houses or beside a car park, that turn out to have the longest histories.

Kilrush grew considerably as a planned town in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries under the influence of the Vandeleur family, who shaped much of its street layout and commercial life. The town also became notorious during the Famine years of the 1840s, when mass evictions on the Vandeleur estate displaced thousands of people and left a visible mark on the landscape and the population alike. Graveyards in towns that experienced such upheaval frequently contain layers of history that resist easy reading, with early Christian foundations sometimes lying beneath post-medieval and modern burials, the chronology compressed and tangled.
