Graveyard, Lanesborough, Co. Longford

The main entrance to this walled graveyard in Lanesborough is no longer where it once was.

Visitors today enter through a wrought-iron gate in the east wall, or clamber over a stile a little further along, yet the original gateway, a round-headed stone archway nearly three metres wide and over two and a half metres high, sits sealed in the west wall, blocked up since the nineteenth century when someone inserted a memorial into it rather than simply closing it off. An engraving published by Francis Grose in 1791 records the archway in its open state, presenting what was clearly an imposing entrance to the site. Above it, something carved into the stonework, possibly an armorial plaque, remains only partially legible to the eye.

The archway dates to the seventeenth century and is associated with works carried out at the site by Sir George Lane, after whom the town itself takes its name. The stonework may have been refined during the eighteenth century, when the external face appears to have been refaced with cut and finely polished jambstones, the dressed vertical stones framing either side of a doorway or opening. The graveyard contains memorials spanning four centuries, from the seventeenth to the twenty-first, and the ground retains fragments of the earlier church that once stood here, some of them repurposed in an unassuming way: pieces of seventeenth-century architectural stonework have been set to use as grave-markers. To the south of the church site lies a seventeenth-century graveslab, and nearby a small sandstone Latin cross from the eighteenth century serves the same quiet function.
