Graveyard, Lisgoold, Co. Cork

A graveyard that has outlasted every church ever built to serve it has a particular quality of persistence.

The hillside burial ground at Lisgoold, on the south side of the road through the village, sits on a site where an ancient parish church once stood, yet that building had already fallen to ruin by 1615 and had vanished entirely by 1694. A replacement Church of Ireland church was constructed in 1789, but that too has left no visible trace above ground. What remains is the graveyard itself, still in active use, quietly absorbing centuries of local memory while the successive structures it once accompanied have dissolved back into the earth.

The rectangular enclosure measures roughly 60 metres east to west and 45 metres north to south, dimensions recorded on the Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1842, which also shows a church footprint in the north-west quadrant, the ghost of a building already long gone by then. The east and west sides are bounded by stone walls, while the north and south sides have concrete block walls, a material shift that signals different phases of maintenance over the decades. A northern extension was added at some point after the 1936 Ordnance Survey revision. The oldest legible inscribed headstone dates to 1757, a figure established by the antiquarian Coleman in the early twentieth century, though the site's use as a burial ground almost certainly predates that marker considerably, given the medieval origins of the parish church it served.

The layering here is worth pausing over. Three distinct structures, an ancient parish church, its ruined successor, and an eighteenth-century Protestant church, have all come and gone from a single hillside, leaving only the headstones to keep count of the years.
