"Lisheen" derives from the Irish "loisín", a diminutive form of "lios", meaning a small ringfort or enclosure, and such names frequently point to early medieval settlement in the surrounding landscape. Graveyards that grew up near or within these old enclosures were often associated with early Christian communities, and many continued to receive burials long after any formal ecclesiastical connection had faded from memory.
