Burial Grounds
A single datestone set into a gateway pier records a name and a precise date, October 27th 1786, and that small inscription may carry more weight than it first appears.
The stone bears the name Michael Nevil, and researchers believe it could mark the construction of both the enclosing wall and the church that stands within the graveyard. It is an unusually specific anchor for a rural burial ground, the kind of detail that makes a quiet field suddenly feel legible.
The graveyard at Mellon sits on a gentle rise in County Limerick, its elevated position giving clear views in every direction, which was not uncommon for early ecclesiastical sites where visibility and symbolic prominence went hand in hand. The enclosure is roughly rectangular, measuring approximately 36 metres north to south and 42 metres east to west, and is bounded by a stone wall built after 1700. Within the northern quadrant of that enclosure stand the ruins of Ardcanny church, a structure recorded separately in the Archaeological Survey of Ireland. The entrance to the graveyard is at the western end of the northern wall, marked by a gate and a stile, the kind of stepped stone crossing built into a wall to allow people through while keeping livestock out. The datestone incorporated into the gateway pier is the principal evidence tying the name Michael Nevil to the site, though whether he was the builder, a patron, or held some other connection to the work is not recorded.
The site sits in open countryside, and the elevated ground that makes it so visible from a distance also means it is reasonably easy to locate on approach. The entrance stile at the west end of the northern wall is the practical way in. The church ruins in the northern part of the enclosure are worth examining closely, as are the gateway piers where the datestone is incorporated. Visitors should look carefully at the stonework around the entrance; inscribed datestones of this kind are not always immediately obvious, but once found they have a way of reframing everything else around them.
